Il World Press Photo 2011 va a una donna.

La foto dell’anno è della fotoreporter sudafricana Jodi Bieber. Sua l’immagine del volto sfigurato della 18enne afghana Bibi Aisha, finita su una discussa copertina del Time come simbolo delle violenze subite dalle donne in Afghanistan. Originaria della provincia di Oruzgan la ragazza a soli 16 anni era stata costretta a sposare un uomo talebano. In seguito alle violenze subite dall’uomo e dalla sua famiglia la giovane aveva tentato la fuga ed era stata poi condannata da un giudice talebano all’amputazione di naso e orecchie. Sulla foto vincitrice la giuria spiega: ”E’ un’immagine tremenda, diversa, spaventosa  – così Vince Aletti –  non parla solo di questa particolare donna, ma della condizione delle donne nel mondo”. L’autrice della fotografia, Jodi Bieber, ha già conquistato otto premi di categoria nel World Press Photo ed é la seconda sudafricana ad aggiudicarsi il massimo riconoscimento.

Dopo un 2010 tutto italiano – a Pietro Masturzo era andato The picture of year – anche la 54esima edizione premia l’Italia: tra i vincitori Davide Monteleone, Fabio Cuttica e Daniele Tamagni. Premiati anche Riccardo Venturi con il reportage di Haiti, Massimo Berruti con il Pakistan, Marco Di Lauro con il Niger, Ivo Saglietti con Srebrenica e Stefano Unterthiner.

Le foto sono state scelte tra 108.059 immagini candidate. Alla selezione hanno partecipato 5.847 fotografi di 125 nazionalità. Una menzione speciale è andata alle dodici immagini scattate dai minatori cileni rimasti intrappolati all’interno della miniera di San Jose.
